And the count is three and two

At a stoplight


checking the rearview mirror.


I see the young woman behind me

taking the brief respite from the road to apply lotion.


Hands to arms, back of the neck,

shoulders then cheeks and back to the arms


a simple, efficient use of time


but looking, from here, all the world

like a third base coach


telling the bus driver across the street

to steal home.
